About Gangotri Dham

Gangotri is one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand, India. Situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,170 ft) on the banks of the holy Bhagirathi River, it is the origin of the Ganges.

Best Time to Visit

The Gangotri temple remains open from Akshay Tritiya (April/May) to Diwali (October/November) each year. The best time to visit is:

  • May–June: Pleasant weather, temple opening ceremony
  • September–October: Clear skies, fewer crowds, temples about to close
  • Avoid July–August due to heavy monsoon rains and risk of landslides.

    How to Reach Gangotri

  • By Air: Nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (~250 km)
  • By Train: Nearest railway station is Rishikesh (~249 km)
  • By Road: Regular buses and taxis from Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Uttarkashi
