About the Gomukh Tapovan Trek

The Gomukh Tapovan Trek is one of the most spiritually profound and visually dramatic treks in all of Uttarakhand. Gomukh — literally “cow's mouth” — is the snout of the Gangotri glacier, the primary source of the holy Ganga. Standing at the glacier's edge watching the river emerge from the ice is an experience that draws pilgrims, mountaineers, and trekkers in equal measure.

From Gomukh, the trail climbs steeply to Tapovan — a high alpine meadow at 4,463 metres, ringed by iconic Garhwal Himalaya peaks: Shivling (6,543m), Bhagirathi I, II and III, and the legendary Meru peak. In summer you'll find mountaineers from across the world camped here alongside sadhus who live at this altitude year-round.

The trek begins at Gangotri town, one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites, and lies entirely within Gangotri National Park, home to snow leopards, Himalayan tahr, and Bhral.

Why this trek is differentUnlike most Himalayan treks that require a long approach drive, the Gomukh trek starts right at Gangotri town. Within 19 km you reach the birthplace of the Ganga. The Tapovan extension adds a 600m ascent that rewards you with one of the finest mountain panoramas in India.

Our 7-day package includes all meals on trail, camping equipment, an experienced local guide, porter allowance, and the mandatory Gangotri National Park forest permit. Group sizes are capped at 12 trekkers.

How Difficult is the Gomukh Tapovan Trek?

The trek is rated Moderate to Difficult. The Gangotri-to-Gomukh section is manageable for trekkers with basic fitness. However, the Gomukh-to-Tapovan ascent on Day 3 involves a steep 600m climb over loose moraine and rock at altitude — demanding good cardiovascular fitness and some trekking experience.

Minimum fitness: ability to walk 12–15 km/day with a 6–8 kg daypack. We recommend 4–6 weeks of cardio training before the trek. Age is not a barrier — we have had trekkers complete this at age 62 — but proper acclimatisation is non-negotiable.

Best Time to Do the Gomukh Tapovan Trek

The trek is open from mid-May to late October. It is completely closed in winter (November–April) when Gangotri National Park officially closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from trekkers planning this route.

Is a permit required for the Gomukh Tapovan Trek?+
Yes. A forest permit from the Gangotri National Park office is mandatory for all trekkers. The current fee is ₹150 per day for Indian nationals and ₹600 per day for foreign nationals. Permits are issued only for a fixed number of trekkers per day. We arrange all permits as part of our package; you only need to carry your government photo ID.
The Gangotri-to-Gomukh section is accessible to fit beginners. However, the Gomukh-to-Tapovan climb on Day 3 is steep and at high altitude — it is not a first-ever trek. We recommend completing at least one moderate trek (Triund, Kedarkantha, or similar) before attempting Tapovan. We can also arrange a 5-day Gomukh-only package.
Our all-inclusive guided package is priced at ₹8,500 per person for groups of 6 or more, and ₹10,500 for solo or small groups of 2–5. This includes meals from Day 2, camping gear, guide, porter, and the forest permit. It does not include transport to Gangotri or travel insurance.
In 2026, the trek opens in mid-May after the Gangotri temple's Akshaya Tritiya opening. May 20 – June 25 and September 5 – October 15 are our recommended windows. July and August should be strictly avoided due to monsoon snowfall and avalanche risk above Bhojbasa.
From Rishikesh: shared jeeps to Uttarkashi (5–6 hrs, ~₹300) then a connecting jeep to Gangotri (3 hrs, ~₹200). From Delhi: overnight bus to Rishikesh (~9 hrs) then the above route. We can coordinate pickup from Rishikesh for an additional charge.
BSNL has intermittent signal in Gangotri and sometimes at Bhojbasa. There is no network at Gomukh or Tapovan. We carry a satellite communication device for emergencies. Inform your family that you will be unreachable for Days 3–5.
Yes. The trail is a well-travelled pilgrimage route. Our groups always include at least one female assistant guide, and we encourage solo women to join our fixed-departure groups of 6–12 people.
Yes — Nandanvan (4,380m) and Vasuki Tal (4,800m) are extensions beyond Tapovan for experienced trekkers. These require 2–3 additional days. We run a separate 11-day package for ₹14,500. Enquire via WhatsApp for 2026 departure dates.
